Inside a 60-Minute Sports Chiro Initial Visit at ELATE

A San Diego sports chiropractor walks through exactly what happens in your first appointment — so you can book without wondering what you’re walking into.

Most people don’t put off booking because they doubt they need help. They put it off because they don’t know what they’re signing up for. Is it a quick crack and a sales pitch for a 24-visit package? A long lecture? Will you be half-dressed on a table ninety seconds after walking in?

Fair questions. So here’s the honest, minute-by-minute version of what a first visit at ELATE actually looks like — so you can decide whether it’s worth your time before you book.

Before You Arrive

Booking happens online through JaneApp — no phone tag required. Once you’re booked, you’ll get an intake form to fill out ahead of time. It covers your training, your history, any injuries, and what you’re hoping to sort out. Filling it in before you arrive means we spend the appointment on you, not on paperwork.

Wear something you can move in. Shorts and a t-shirt are ideal, because a lot of the visit is watching how you actually move. If you’re coming straight from work, that’s fine — we’ll work around it.

The First 60 Minutes

The visit is one-on-one with Dr. Ashley Aguero, DC, the whole way through. It usually breaks down like this.

The conversation. We start by talking. What do you do for training? What’s bothering you, and for how long? What have you already tried? This isn’t small talk — it’s how we figure out what’s actually worth assessing. The story you tell often points toward the answer faster than any single test does.

The movement assessment. Next, we watch you move. Squat, hinge, reach overhead, load the area that’s been bugging you — whatever’s relevant to your sport and your symptoms. The goal is to see how the whole system works together, not just to poke at the spot that hurts. The area that hurts isn't always the area contributing most to the problem.

Treatment, the same day. You don’t leave with a plan to start treatment “next time.” We treat on the first visit. Depending on what we find, that might be a chiropractic adjustment, sports myofascial work — cupping, IASTM, or Myofascial Release Technique (MRT) — or a combination. Which tools we reach for depends entirely on what the assessment turns up. The point is figuring out what’s contributing to the problem and then choosing the tool that fits, rather than running the same routine on everyone.

Why a Full Hour

Sixty minutes isn’t padding. A rushed assessment is how things get missed. The history, watching you move, treating the same day, and explaining what we found all take time to do properly — and doing them properly the first time often helps create a more efficient plan moving forward. A first appointment that’s actually thorough tends to be the cheapest one in the long run.

What You’ll Leave With

Two things. First, a clearer picture of what’s going on and what’s driving it. Second, movement work to take home — usually a short, specific set of things to do between visits to help reinforce what we did during treatment. The hands-on work matters, but what you do in the days between appointments often matters more. We’d rather send you home with two exercises you’ll actually do than ten you won’t.

If a follow-up makes sense, we’ll tell you why and roughly how many. If it doesn’t, we’ll tell you that too. No packages sold at the door.

Who the Initial Visit Is For

Start here if you’re new to ELATE, if you’re carrying pain or a nagging injury, or if you’re simply not sure which service you need. It’s built for lifters, runners, CrossFitters, and active adults around North Park and across San Diego who want someone to actually assess the problem rather than guess at it.

If you already know your body well and just want a quick reset between training blocks, the standalone Chiropractic Adjustment may be the better fit — it’s shorter and more focused. But if there’s any question mark over what’s going on, the initial visit is where to start. It’s hard to treat something well without assessing it first.

What This Visit Is Not

It’s not emergency care, and it’s not a substitute for medical management when that’s what’s needed. If something you’re dealing with calls for imaging, labs, or a referral, part of doing this job well is recognizing that and saying so. You’ll get an honest read on whether sports chiropractic is the right tool for your situation — including when it isn’t.
